Skiing in France

Introduction

France is a country well known for its great food and beautiful landscapes, and ski holidays in France really showcase this. Due to the high altitude of many of the resorts, there is brilliant snow reliability throughout the whole of the winter season. France has a number of large ski areas, where you can enjoy a variety of different slopes for beginner and advanced skiers and snowboarders.

Skiing in France

There are many reasons to choose a ski holiday in France. First of all there is a great chance for both snow, and favourable skiing conditions. There are also a number of ski areas with glaciers, including Tignes, Les Deux Alpes, Alpe d’Huez, Val Thorens and La Plagne. France is also home to the prestigious Les Trios Vallees; the largest connected ski area in the world.

Les Trios Vallees is made up of Val Thorens, Les Menuires, Méribel, St. Martin de Belleville and Courchevel. Val Thorens is the highest ski resort in Europe (2300m), and is famous for its après-ski scene. Méribel is also famous for its nightlife, and for having two Olympic standard descents.

Many believe that ski holidays in France consist of modern concrete buildings; however, there are many resorts that still maintain an authentic French charm. Two examples that emphasis this are the mountain villages of St. Sorlin d'Arves and St. Jean d'Arves in the Les Sybelles ski area. These resorts consist of a number of traditional, romantic chalets.

True winter enthusiasts know that some of the best skiing in France can be done in the area of Paradiski. This name is really justified, as it is literally a skiing paradise. It has over 400km of slopes and features the picturesque resorts of La Plagne and Les Arcs. These areas are connected by the Vanoise Express lift, which can take 200 people from one side to the other in four minutes.

Ski Holidays for families

For families, there are also great options for ski holidays in France. Les Portes du Soleil features the resorts Avoriaz, Morzine, Châtel and Les Gets. A unique advantage of this area is that you can even ski all the way to Switzerland!

Avoriaz is a car-free village with a great deal of horse-drawn sleighs running around. There is also the Aquariaz, an aquatic paradise with pools, baths, water slides and more. Morzine has more of a traditional feel, and as the resort is lower than Avoriaz, generally packages are cheaper here.
