Skiing in Fügen/Hochfügen - Hochzillertal

The Hochzillertal-Hochfügen ski area is located in the Zillertal Valley, one of Austria's most beautiful alpine regions, and is considered one of the country's most popular ski destinations. Accessible from two valley stations, Fügen and Kaltenbach, the area offers nearly 100 kilometres of slopes. It is particularly popular with Dutch visitors thanks to its modern lift system, high-altitude terrain, and numerous cosy mountain huts.

Thanks to its high altitude and favourable snow conditions, the winter season often lasts until early May. Snow reliability is especially high in Hochfügen, making it a great choice throughout the season. With around 80 kilometres of slopes, the ski area offers something for everyone, from beginners to experienced skiers. While some of the valley runs can be challenging for beginners, it is always possible to take the gondola back down. Several blue runs higher up the mountain also provide excellent terrain for those who are just starting out.

Fügen/Spieljoch & Hochfügen

With the same ski pass, you can enjoy both the Fügen/Spieljoch and Hochfügen ski areas, although they are not directly connected. The Hochfügen and Hochzillertal ski areas are linked by the modern eight-seater Wedelexpress lift, giving you access to a total of 166 kilometres of slopes.

For even more variety, the Zillertal Superskipass provides access not only to these ski areas, but also to Ski Zillertal 3000, including the Hintertux Glacier, as well as the Zillertal Arena. This makes it an excellent choice for skiers looking to explore the extensive slopes of the Zillertal region.

The villages Fügen

The charming and family-friendly winter sports resort of Fügen is located at the entrance to the Zillertal Valley, just 9 kilometres from the motorway to Innsbruck. On the western side of the village, the Spieljoch gondola connects Fügen with the Spieljoch ski area, climbing an impressive 1,200 metres in altitude.

At around 1,900 metres above sea level, several lifts and cable cars provide access to a variety of beautiful and often sunny slopes. Families with young children will appreciate the childcare facilities available in the resort. Fügen also features a beginner's area and a 2-kilometre-long toboggan run.

Both the slopes and the beginner areas are equipped with snow cannons, helping to ensure excellent snow conditions throughout the season. Snowboarders can enjoy a fun park as well as plenty of opportunities for off-piste adventures.

After a day on the slopes, you can unwind in one of Fügen's cosy bars or lively après-ski venues. The popular Badwandl/Nightzone disco is a favourite among visitors. The resort also offers a wide selection of welcoming restaurants, making it easy to round off the day with a good meal and a relaxed atmosphere.

Hochfügen

Situated at an altitude of 1,474 metres, Hochfügen is an ideal destination for keen winter sports enthusiasts. Although smaller than nearby Fügen, Hochfügen offers the major advantage that many hotels and apartments are located directly on, or very close to, the slopes. This makes it a popular choice for skiers and snowboarders who want to maximise their time on the mountain from early morning until late afternoon. Hochfügen can be reached via a scenic 14-kilometre mountain road from Fügen.

From Hochfügen, you have direct access to the slopes of the Hochzillertal-Hochfügen ski area. This extensive ski region offers something for every type of skier, from challenging black runs on the Pfaffenbühel to gentle beginner slopes near the Lamark lifts. The excellent variety of terrain makes it a great choice for both beginners and experienced winter sports enthusiasts.

After a day on the slopes, head to one of the cosy umbrella bars for a lively après-ski atmosphere right on the mountain.

Kaltenbach

Kaltenbach is a charming village in the Zillertal Valley, located around 17 kilometres from Mayrhofen and serving as an excellent base for a winter sports holiday. The gondola lift to the Hochzillertal ski area departs directly from the village, providing quick and easy access to the slopes.

Après-ski in Kaltenbach centres around the lively bars near the gondola station, including popular venues such as the Postalm and Tiroler Stadl. Here, you can unwind after a day on the mountain and enjoy the welcoming atmosphere of this traditional Austrian ski resort.

Tip: Every Friday evening, the valley run in Kaltenbach is illuminated, giving you the opportunity to enjoy a few evening runs for a small additional fee.
