Carbon neutral holidays

Sustainable travel: Sunweb compensates the CO₂ offset

At Sunweb, we constantly try to improve our social, economic and environmental impact, in everything we do. That is why when you travel with us, your holiday is carbon neutral. This means that when you buy a holiday with one of our brands, we calculate the carbon emissions of your trip and then fund projects that reduce the same amount of carbon emissions. We do this for every Sunweb holiday.

The projects that we fund are independently verified and meet internationally agreed standards, ensuring that the amount of carbon removed from the atmosphere matches what is claimed. We know that carbon offsetting is not the solution to climate change, but it is a vital part of taking responsibility now for our emissions.

We are proud to be one of the first travel providers to offer carbon-neutral holidays and help customers choose more environmentally friendly travel options.

Sunweb takes responsibility for combating climate change. That is why the company covers the costs of the CO2 compensation and you as a customer pay nothing extra.

What is Sunweb Group doing?

For every one of Sunweb Group’s holidays, we calculate carbon emissions generated by travelling to the destination and staying there. We then offset these emissions through third-party-certified low-carbon projects. We recognise that this is not the silver bullet solution to climate change. However, it is an industry-leading step towards tackling the biggest environmental impact of our holidays.

Frequently asked questions

Why is Sunweb doing this?

Nowadays, everyone realises that we must move towards a carbon-neutral world. Every time you go on a holiday, take a flight, stay at a hotel or ride a bus, carbon emissions are generated. It’s in our company values to constantly try to improve our social, economic and environmental impact, in everything we do. As a travel company, we believe it’s our responsibility to minimise our carbon footprint. In our industry, there are many ways to minimise that footprint, but at this moment certain carbon emissions are unavoidable, no matter what. So, if we want to contribute to carbon neutrality, offsetting the carbon emissions we can’t reduce is currently the only way to make a real impact.

We recognise that this is not the silver bullet solution to climate change. However, it is an industry-leading step towards tackling the biggest environmental impact of our holidays. We truly believe we can have an impact if we think big and offer carbon offset standard for all of our holidays and all of our customers - over one million in total. As Sunweb, we can use our influence as a leading travel company to initiate sustainable change in the travel sector and encourage our travel partners and other travel companies to also take responsibility for their carbon emissions. Our carbon offset programme is the vital first step of many to make the world a better place.

What is carbon offsetting?

Carbon offsetting is a way of reducing carbon emissions. When you buy a carbon offset certificate, you are paying for one tonne of carbon emissions to be reduced. Each carbon offset certificate guarantees that CO2 emissions have been reduced by one tonne. This is achieved through projects that reduce emissions around the world. You'll be familiar with these projects; they include installing wind and solar farms and protecting rainforests. All of the projects are certified by third parties and go through a rigorous system of checks and balances.o text in field]

What happens when Sunweb offsets my holiday?

We calculate the carbon emissions associated with each holiday that our customers take with Sunweb. This involves calculating emissions from the following four activities:

1. Flights to and from the destination
2. (or) Coach travel to and from the destination
3. Transfers from the airport to the hotel and back again
4. Accommodation

We then support projects that reduce carbon emissions by an equivalent amount. In this way, all of our holidays are carbon neutral.

Which projects does Sunweb support?

Sunweb is supporting carbon emissions reductions through renewable energy projects in India. These projects reduce carbon emissions at scale, as well as providing clean electricity to thousands of people.

For example, Sunweb is supporting wind farms in Madhya Pradesh, in central India, and Rajasthan, in the Northwest. Together, these projects reduce carbon emissions by more than 350,000 tonnes each year, as well as generating electricity sufficient to power 76,000 Indian homes.

All of the projects that Sunweb supports are certified to the highest quality standards in the voluntary carbon market, such as the Verified Carbon Standard.

How does offsetting help tackle climate change?

Offsetting tackles climate change by:
  • making real reductions in amounts of CO2 in the atmosphere that would not have happened otherwise;
  • providing funds for renewable technologies and energy-efficient solutions;
  • raising awareness of the impact that our lifestyles have on the climate.
Since its foundation in 1997, voluntary climate action through offsetting has reduced carbon emissions by approximately 1 billion tonnes worldwide.

Who are ClimateCare and why have you partnered with them?

With more  than 20 years of experience in developing and running programmes designed to reduce carbon emissions at scale, ClimateCare develops cost-efficient, high-impact programmes to tackle poverty, improve health and protect the environment using its trademarked Climate+Care approach.  Another important criterium is the match with our company values and way of working; we keep challenging ourselves and are constantly trying to improve our social, economic and environmental impact.
